Learn to use interior textiles to set a mood, establish a theme, and create an ambiance.  From soft and subtle to bold and dynamic, Interior Textiles gives the technical knowledge and skills plus the aesthetic ability needed to fully leverage the potentials of textiles for interior design.  Readers will learn textile specifications, testing, selection, installation and maintenance, as well as the unique properties of individual fabrics.  Moreover, they will discover sustainable design techniques to design green. The text is divided into three parts: Part I, Fabrics, begins with an overview of the textiles industry.  Next are detailed discussions of fibers and yarns, including fabric construction, conversion, coloring, and finishing.  The final chapter features a glossary style introduction to decorative and support fabrics, including proper names, weights, and applications. Part II, Applications, guides you to the best choices for specific applications.  You learn the hows and whys of textiles for upholstered furniture, slipcovers, wall coverings, window treatments, linens and accessories, broadloom carpeting, and hand- and machine-made rugs. Part III, Period Styles, explores the use of color, pattern, texture, and style to evoke different periods in history.  Richly illustrated, this part is divided into chapters covering Oriental; formal traditional; medieval, colonial and country; regional and thematic; and modern styles.

I earned my bachelor's degree in Interior Design, Business, and Textile Science from the University of Wisconsin at Madison, and went on to study Historic Preservation and Architecture at the University of Texas at Austin, where I earned my Master of Science degree. When I am tutoring, I prefer to use a "learning lab" format, where my student and I discuss the material using critical thinking. I find it important to get to know my students enough so I can present the material in such a way that it resonates with them on an individual... Read more
